Praying with Thomas Cole’s "Expulsion from the Garden of Eden"

What if paradise isn't just a place we lost—but a way of seeing? Thomas Cole's Expulsion from the Garden of Eden contrasts light and darkness, life and death, yet it may reveal something deeper than a story of exile. In this guided meditation, we contemplate whether separation is the real fall—and whether God's invitation is simply to return to God's presence.

Genesis 3:22-24

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Try to open your senses to God’s presence. Become aware of that deep place within you that knows God is near. Open that part of you.

Draw in a deep breath and release it. This breath is a gift of God.

Relax your body. Release your tension. Be comfortable.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

This is an image of contrasts. On the right, there is light, color, and life. On the left, there is darkness. The color is faded, and death is evident.

There is a chasm between these two scenes. Two tiny figures walk away from Paradise, chased by the light into a world of trials. As you move into contemplation, look deeply at how Paradise is imagined, and how the world outside Paradise is shown.

This image holds the tension between good and evil, life and death, unity and separation. It may stir feelings of exile or hopelessness. It may also become an invitation to step back into Paradise and spend time with God. Let us receive that invitation now.

Scripture

Genesis 3:22–24, Inclusive Bible

Then the Holy One said, “Look, these humans have become like one of us, knowing both good and evil. They must not be allowed to take in their hands the fruit from the tree of life as well, or they will eat of it and live forever.”

So the Holy One drove them from the Garden of Eden, and sent them to till the soil from which they had been taken. Once they were banished, winged sphinxes with fiery, ever turning swords were placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden to guard the way to the Tree of Life.

Let the Spirit be present as you receive this passage. Notice what rises in you as the text meets the image, and as both meet your life with God.

Artwork for Prayerful Reflection

The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Thomas Cole

Let the painting become a doorway into prayer.

Allow your eyes to drift from side to side. Do not dwell too long on any one thing at first.

As you gaze, let Paradise and the world beyond Paradise speak gently to your spirit. Stay here a moment.

Closing

Let us take a moment knowing that right now we are with God. Look again toward Paradise. Rest in God’s presence, not by striving, but by simply being with God.

Draw in another deep breath and release it.

Holy One, when the world feels divided or falling apart, draw us back into your presence. Teach us to live in unity with you, with creation, and with one another. Hold us in the life that comes from being near you. Amen.
