Praying with Simeon Solomon's "The Mother of Moses"
What act of courageous trust is God asking of you today? In Simeon Solomon's The Mother of Moses, we enter the tender and heartbreaking moment before Moses is placed in the Nile, held between fear and faith. Through art, Scripture, and prayer, we reflect on what it means to release our fears, trust God's guidance, and follow where the Spirit leads.
Exodus 2:1-4
Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.
Opening
Let us prepare ourselves for contemplation.
Find a comfortable place. Let your body settle. Notice where you carry tension. Gently stretch and release. Settle. Calm.
Pay attention to your breathing. Let it become slower, deeper, and richer. Take a moment simply to be with God. No words are needed. No images are required.
Just be present with God.
Reflection on Contemplative Prayer
Moses’ mother and sister lean in and gaze at the infant who will become a prophet. Miriam holds a basket. This is the last moment for the family to gather before they place him in the river and see where the current will carry the child. It is a moment of goodbye, of prayer, and of uncertainty.
As you enter this image, notice the tenderness and the risk. Notice the love that must let go. Notice the faith that places what is most precious into God’s care.
This story holds the tension between fear and freedom, slavery and deliverance, human courage and divine care. Let the image become a doorway into prayer.
Where is God calling you to deeper faith?
Scripture
Exodus 2:1–4, Inclusive Bible
There was a man from the house of Levi who had married a Levite woman, and she conceived and gave birth to a boy. And she saw that the baby was good. So she hid it for three months.
When she could hide the baby no longer, she took a papyrus basket, daubed it with bitumen and pitch, and put the child in it, and placed the basket among the reeds by the banks of the Nile.
The baby sister watched from a distance to learn what would happen.
Holy Spirit, be present as this text meets the image and our lives. Help us notice what courage, trust, and surrender are being invited in us.
Artwork for Prayerful Reflection
The Mother of Moses, Simeon Solomon
Simeon Solomon painted this image at age nineteen, holding together a tender biblical scene and a larger longing for freedom. The figures invite us to consider love, risk, and the lives carried by God’s river.
As you gaze, let the painting speak as prayer. Notice the basket, the child, the mother, the sister, the reeds, and the river. Stay here a moment.
