Praying with Renoir's "Path Leading Through Tall Grass"
What path are you walking today? Renoir's Path Leading Through Tall Grass invites us to reflect on the roads we travel, the memories we carry, and the presence of God that meets us along the way. Join us for a contemplative prayer experience as we discover that the journey itself can become a place of joy, wisdom, and grace.
Psalm 16:11 & Proverbs 4:18
Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.
Opening
Let us lay aside our busyness and open ourselves to the Spirit.
Breathe deeply, taking in what is life-giving and necessary.
Breathe out, setting free anxiety and stress.
Relax your body, and let the tension drain away.
Reflection on Contemplative Prayer
The path of life is a symbol of walking, discovering, and wondering what is around the next bend. Mary Caroline Richards writes, “The journey is not a road to a place but a road to a presence.”
Paths are places of becoming. They remind us that faith is not standing still, and it is not possessing all the answers. A path invites us to trust the next step, knowing that as we walk, the we focus on the here and now.
As you enter this time of contemplation, let the image become a place of prayer. Notice the path, the people upon it, and the tall grass around them. Notice what is revealed, what is hidden, and what invites your attention.
Stay here a moment.
Scripture
Psalm 16:11 [New Revised Standard Version, Updated Edition.]
You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Spend a moment in God’s presence. There is no agenda, nothing you need to do but be with God.
Artwork for Prayerful Reflection
Path Leading Through Tall Grass, Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Let us look at the painting. Begin with the path and the people on it. Then let your gaze move to the areas off the path, where the grass, light, and open space may hold another invitation.
As you gaze, allow scriptures, wisdom, memories, and longings to rise without judgment. Receive what comes, and listen for the life-sustaining message God may be offering today.
Reflection Questions
What do you notice first as you look at the path and the people walking on it?
What scriptures or words of wisdom about paths, ways, or roads come to mind?
How does the path in the painting speak to your own season of walking, waiting, or becoming?
What do you notice in the places off the path?
What memories from your life arise as you gaze at the image?
What scripture, word, or memory seems to hold a message from God for you today?
As you hold that message before God, what further revelation begins to emerge?
Where do you sense the fullness of life and the fullness of God today?
What life-sustaining message do you want to carry with you from this time of prayer?
Closing
God of the path, guide us into your presence. Teach us to trust the next step, to notice what is revealed, and to receive with patience what is hidden. Let the light grow brighter as we walk with you, and let your joy be enough for today. Amen.
