Hospitality opens the heart to God and neighbor, transforming relationships through attentiveness and love. Mary and Elizabeth’s visitation models a sacred exchange of support and grace. How can you embody true hospitality by listening deeply and welcoming others with an open heart?

Luke 1:39-56

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Take a slow breath in. And let it go gently.

Let your shoulders soften. Unclench your jaw. Rest your hands in your lap.

In this moment, you are held in the presence of God. Stay here a moment.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

As we draw closer to God, we are also drawn closer to one another. Love that truly transforms the heart makes room—room to welcome others, not only those who are familiar, but all people.

In contemplative prayer, we practice attentiveness to God in stillness. From that stillness, we learn to set aside our own preoccupations, so we can be fully present to another.

Today, we enter the mystery often called the Visitation—Mary coming to Elizabeth, and Elizabeth receiving her with warmth.

Imagine the scene. Listen in on the conversation. Notice what rises within you.

Scripture

Luke 1:39–56 (The Inclusive Bible)

Within a few days, Mary set out and hurried to the hill country, to a town of Judah, where she entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

In a loud voice, she exclaimed:

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. But why am I so favored that the mother of the Messiah should come to me? The moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who believed that what our God said to her would be accomplished.”

Mary said:
“My soul proclaims your greatness, O God,
and my spirit rejoices in you, my Savior.

For you have looked with favor
upon your lowly servant,
and from this day forward
all generations will call me blessed.

For you, the Almighty, have done great things for me,
and holy is your Name.
Your mercy reaches from age to age
for those who fear you.

You have shown strength with your arm.
You have scattered the proud in their conceit.
You have deposed the mighty from their thrones
and raised the lowly to high places.
You have filled the hungry with good things,
while you have sent the rich away empty.

You have come to the aid of Israel, your servant,
mindful of your mercy—
the promise you made to our ancestors—
to Sarah and Abraham
and their descendants forever.”

Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months,
and then returned home.

Holy Spirit, breathe through these words. Let this meeting of Mary and Elizabeth become a living place of prayer within us.

Artwork for Prayerful Reflection

The Visitation He Qi

As you gaze, notice the bold lines and bright colors. Let the simplicity of the image open a quiet doorway in you.

In this depiction, Mary and Elizabeth meet on the street—welcome offered right where Mary is, immediate and warmly inviting.

See Mary with head bowed and veiled, holding the precious gift within. See Elizabeth turned toward her, listening without hesitation—an open space made by laying aside her own concerns.

Notice the empty pitcher in Elizabeth’s hand—an image of openness, and of holding another’s story with reverence. Remember: this is sacred space, not only then, but now too. God is present.

Reflection Questions

As you look at the artwork, what do you see first?

What do you hear or sense as you first gaze—what stirs in your body, your thoughts, your spirit?

What is the mood of this meeting, as you imagine it?

As you hear Luke’s words again, what word or phrase seems meant for you today?

What might God be saying to you about hospitality—about making room in your heart?

Who has accompanied you on your journey, helping you notice the new life in Christ being birthed within you?

Where have you been like Elizabeth to someone else—offering “soul hospitality” for their story?

How attentive are you to the movement of the Spirit in others right now?

Where might you offer holy stillness and silence—sacred space—for someone to share what is true?

How does the message you received—about hospitality, community, or wisdom—touch the way you will meet others this week?

Closing

God of welcome, make our hearts a spacious home for your love. Teach us to lay aside what crowds us, so we can listen with our whole being and receive one another as sacred gift. Draw us closer to you, and closer to each other. Amen.
