In this week’s episode of Art and Prayer, we are invited into a conversation with artist Sue Trowbridge about her creative process and her recent painting, Sophia. Sue reflects on her experiences in nature and how they shape her art, particularly the sense of delight and joy she sees in creation. Her story sets the stage for a time of prayer that draws us more deeply into the biblical image of Wisdom at God’s side during creation.

The scripture chosen for today comes from Proverbs 8:30–31, where Wisdom (Sophia) speaks of standing beside God as a skilled artisan, delighting in the Creator and rejoicing in the world and humankind. This passage invites us to picture creation not only as an act of divine power but also as a shared joy. Through Sue’s painting and her reflections, we are asked to consider where we see God’s delight in creation and how creation itself sings in praise.

C.S. Lewis’s words from The Weight of Glory deepen this reflection: the astonishing truth that God does not merely pity us but delights in us, much like an artist delights in their work. This perspective transforms our prayer into a dialogue with the God who takes joy in us, who sees us as essential to divine happiness.

During our time together, we are invited to listen for God’s delight, to reflect on the ways God’s love has touched our lives, and to ask what response we might offer. Perhaps the God of delight is calling us toward new acts of care, service, or joy. Perhaps the call is simply to rest in the assurance that we are cherished.

As Sue continues her journey of creating a twelve-piece series on the Bible, she reminds us through her art that divine wisdom is alive in creation and within us. May this time of contemplative prayer help you sense God’s delight in you and inspire you to share that joy with others.
