What if the feeding of the multitudes is more than a story about what Jesus did? This ancient mosaic invites us to see Christ not simply as the one who multiplied bread and fish, but as the one who still reaches out to feed us today.

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Claim the space around you as sacred space. It may be ordinary space most of the time, but for right now, while you are with God, it becomes sacred ground, sanctified by the presence of the Divine.

Draw in the breath of life, and release it. Remember that God has given you life.

Remind yourself that God wants to meet with you. God desires to communicate with you.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

This image invites us to gaze through it, as we might with an icon, toward the God who cares for people enough to provide for us. Here, Christ is not only remembered in a past event. Christ is present as the one who blesses, breaks, and gives what we need. As you look, bring your hunger before God: hunger for presence, healing, teaching, and grace.

Matthew 14:15–20, Inclusive Bible

As evening drew on, the disciples approached Jesus and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late. Dismiss the crowds so they can go to the villages and buy some food for themselves.”

Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to disperse. Give them something to eat yourselves.”

“We have nothing here,” they replied, “but five loaves and a couple of fish.”

“Bring them here,” Jesus said.

Then he ordered the crowds to sit on the grass. Taking the five loaves and two fish, Jesus looked up to heaven, blessed the food, broke it, and gave it to the disciples, who in turn gave it to the people. All those present ate their fill. The fragments remaining, when gathered up, filled twelve baskets.

May the Spirit meet us in this story of need, blessing, and abundance. May the image help us recognize Christ’s hands extended toward us.

Open us to receive what Christ prepares for us, and let this holy meal draw us nearer to you. Amen.
