Praying with Georg Pencz's "The Parable of the Sower"

What kind of soil are you today? Through Georg Pencz’s engraving and Jesus’ parable of the sower, this episode invites you into quiet reflection and deep listening. Let the lines of scripture and art open you to the surprising ways God is at work within you.

Matthew 13:18-23

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Settle into a comfortable position. Let your shoulders soften.

Breathe in, slowly. And breathe out, slowly.

Remind yourself that God is present, here with you. Listen.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

Today, let us use an image and a scripture as a doorway into prayer. As you gaze and as you listen, allow your heart to open to what God is saying to you today. Sometimes God speaks through the main scene of a passage or a picture. At other times, it is one word from the scripture, or one small detail in the image, that becomes an opening—where God offers a message about your life.

Stay here a moment.

Scripture

Matthew 13:18–23 (The Inclusive Bible)

Now listen to the parable of the sower.

When people hear the message about the kingdom of God without understanding it, the evil one comes along and snatches away what was sown in their hearts. This is the seed sown along the path.

Those who received the seed that fell on rocky ground are the ones who hear the word and at first welcome it with joy. But they have no roots, so they last only for a while. When some setback or persecution comes because of the message, they quickly fall away.

Those who received the message that fell among the thorns are the ones who hear the word. But then worldly anxieties and the lure of wealth choke it off, and the message produces no fruit.

But those who receive the seed that fell on rich soil are those who hear the message and understand it. They produce a crop that yields a hundred, or sixty, or thirty times what is sown.

Holy Spirit, come close as we hold these words.

Let one phrase, one image, or one small detail become the place where you speak your wisdom for today.

Reflection Questions

As you look at the engraving, where do you notice each part of the parable—the path, the rocky ground, the thorns, and the rich soil?

What stirs in you as you find the seed being snatched away—what in your life feels exposed, hurried, or easily taken?

When you notice the rocky ground, what does it reveal about places in you that welcome God’s word but struggle to grow roots?

What setbacks, pressures, or fears have been shaping how you receive the message of the kingdom these days?

As you notice the thorns, what anxieties or attachments have been crowding your attention and choking off fruit?

Where do you sense rich soil in you right now—and what helps you hear, understand, and hold God’s word?

What part of the engraving seems to be calling for your attention, and what happens when you stay with it in silence?

As you hold that detail in your heart and return to the scripture, what new insight begins to open?

What do you sense God saying to you today through this word and this image, and why does it matter for your life right now?

What response or action is forming in you—and what clarifications or gentle additions does God offer as you consider it?

Closing

God of generous sowing, thank you for the time we have shared with you. Help us hold what you have shown us, and tend in us the soil that receives your word. Bring your harvest in your time, in your way. Amen.
