Luke 12:22-31

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Take a slow breath in.

Let your shoulders soften as you breathe out.

Settle your body into the place where you are.

Let the day be what it has been, and let this moment be what it is. In God’s presence, you do not have to hurry.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

Today, let us pray with an image of the natural world—green, water, and light—offered to you as a place to rest.

As you gaze, imagine yourself stepping into this scene. Hear birdsong. Notice the quiet trickle of water. Feel wind moving through leaves and grasses. Bring to God whatever anxiety or stress you carry today. Let the beauty before you become a gentle medicine, leading you toward balance and peace.

Listen.

Scripture

Luke 12:22–31 (The Inclusive Bible)

Then Jesus said to the disciples, “That’s why I tell you, don’t worry about your life and what you are to eat. Don’t worry about your body and what you are to wear. For life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

Take a lesson from the ravens. They don’t sow or reap. They have neither a food cellar nor a barn. Yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable are you than birds? Can any of you, for all your worrying, add a single hour to your life? If even the smallest things are beyond your control, why worry about all the rest?

Notice how the flowers grow. They neither labor nor weave. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was robed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass in the field, which is here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, how much more will God look after you! You have so little faith.

As for you, don’t set your hearts on what you’ll eat or what you’ll drink. Stop worrying. All the nations of the world seek these things. Yet your Abba God well knows what you need. Set your sights on the kingdom of God, and all these other things will be given to you as well.”

Holy Spirit, breathe these words into us again. Let them become a message from God—spoken into the places where we feel pulled, pressured, or afraid.

The Japanese Footbridge and the Water Lily Pool — Claude Monet

As you look, notice how green occupies so much of the space—trees, grasses, and lily pads pressing into the water and sky. Receive this strength of natural life as a steadying gift.

Notice the footbridge, wooden and quiet, blending into its surroundings. Let it speak to you of a gentle order—human life not overpowering creation, but learning harmony within it.

Reflection Questions

As you gaze at the painting, what part of the scene first draws your attention, and what might God be meeting you with there?

Where do you notice the strength of natural life in this image, and what does that strength awaken in you?

When you hear Jesus say, “Stop worrying,” what worries rise to the surface for you—and what do they ask of your care and attention?

What words or phrases from this Scripture feel like a message from God for you today?

As you look at the bridge, what might it symbolize in your life—transition, connection, boundaries, or a path you are being invited to walk?

Where do you sense a need for balance between your own needs and the needs of the world around you?

If you remain open and give the message time to clarify itself, what begins to come into focus in your heart, mind, or soul?

What changes of attitude, activity, or lifestyle are being suggested—and what grace might God be offering to help you live them?

What is the first step you are being invited to take, and when might you take it?

Closing

Abba God, you know what we need. Walk alongside us as you lead us into balance and peace. Help us remain open and attentive to your Spirit, and give us courage for the first faithful step. Amen.
