John 14:2-3
Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.
Opening
Settle into a comfortable position. Let your shoulders soften.
Take a slow breath in. And a gentle breath out.
Stay here a moment.
Reflection on Contemplative Prayer
As you gaze at today’s artwork, let it become a doorway into prayer.
We come with a deep need for home—safe shelter, yes, and also a place of belonging: a place where you are seen, where what you do matters, where what you say matters. We also carry the ache of displacement—within our world, within our stories, and sometimes within our own hearts. In this prayer, hold together three threads: our longing for home, the expansiveness of grace, and the work of forgiveness.
Do not hurry. Be patient in your listening.
Scripture
John 14:2–3 (The Inclusive Bible)
In God’s house there are many dwelling places. Otherwise, how could I have told you that I was going to prepare a place for you? I am indeed going to prepare a place for you, and then I will come back to take you with me, that where I am, there you may be as well.
Holy Spirit, come near as these words settle in us. Let them meet our longing for home, and let them open us to grace that welcomes, heals, and leads us.
Artwork for Prayerful Reflection
The Mystery of Grace — Cody F. Miller
As you look, notice what draws your eye, your mind, or your heart.
Let the painting hold the questions gently: How do we find our way home? What does grace cost? What does forgiveness make possible?
Allow God to speak to what arises in you as you remain with the image.
Reflection Questions
As you look at the painting, what part of it keeps asking for your attention?
What might that drawn-to place be saying about your longing for home—safety, belonging, rest, or being seen?
When you hear the words, “In God’s house there are many dwelling places,” what memories, hopes, or grief rise up in you?
Where do you notice displacement in your own life right now—and what would “a prepared place” look like there?
As you stay with the painting, what emotions surface in you?
How might God be speaking to those emotions—comforting, challenging, inviting, or healing?
When you consider grace as an “expensive word,” what sacrifices—given or received—come to mind?
What might forgiveness be opening in you right now: a return, a release, a repair, or a new way forward?
As you pray, how do these simple words want to be spoken in your life today: “I love you.” “Please forgive me.” “I forgive you.”
What response is rising in you to what God is saying—and what might you want to write down so you can return to it?
Closing
God of grace, lead us home. Prepare in us a dwelling place where love can speak truthfully, where forgiveness can be received and given, and where we can rest in your care. Keep us patient in our listening, and faithful in our response. Amen.
