Praying with Katsushika Hokusai’s "Great Wave off Kanagawa"

Towering waves. Tiny boats. A mountain that seems small but is actually greater than the storm. Join us for a contemplative prayer experience with Katsushika Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa as we reflect on Psalm 93 and listen for God's voice amid life's chaos. What waves are you facing—and what might God be revealing beyond them?

Psalm 93:3-4

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Let us set aside our busyness for a moment.

Take a slow breath.

Relax your shoulders. Unclench your hands. Let your body grow still.

Soak in the divine presence.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

As you gaze at this image, the wave seems to fill everything. Water and foam rise high, ready to fall. Three boats strain beneath it, their crews rowing to keep from being overturned. And in the distance, small to the eye yet steady in its place, stands Mount Fuji.

This image holds both motion and stillness, danger and calm. It names something true about life: there are moments when the waves feel larger than we are, when survival itself seems to demand all our strength. Yet prayer invites another way of seeing. Stay here a moment. Let this image become a place where God meets you in the middle of what feels overwhelming.

Scripture

Psalm 93:3–4, Inclusive Bible

The seas are shouting, God—
the seas raise their voices;
the seas shout with pounding waves.

Stronger than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea,
mightiest of all is God.

Let these words settle in you. Ask the Spirit to meet you between the lines, and to bring this image into conversation with your life today.

Artwork for Prayerful Reflection

The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai

The wave dominates the scene, but it does not tell the whole story. Look also for the boats, the people, and the mountain held within the frame.

As you pray, let the image open a path into honesty, courage, and trust. Notice what draws your attention, and receive it as an invitation.

Reflection Questions

As you look at the waves, what rises in you—fear, awe, resistance, wonder, or something else?

When you look closely at the boats and the people, what do you notice about effort, vulnerability, or perseverance?

What waves in your life feel strongest right now, and where do you see others carrying heavy waters of their own?

If you let your eyes rest on Mount Fuji, what changes in your sense of the scene?

What scripture, memory, or word of wisdom comes to mind as you remain with this image?

What message might God be speaking to you through the space between the waves and the mountain?

What words of prayer or praise are forming in you now?

How are you being invited to listen more deeply, beyond the wind and the crashing waves?

Closing

God of the deep waters, meet us in every chaotic moment. When the waves rise high and our strength feels small, hold us in your presence. Give us stillness at the center, courage for what is before us, and ears to hear your voice beyond the storm. Amen.
