Praying with Paul Gauguin's "The Yellow Christ"

Have you longed for a simpler life, free from the chaos and noise? In Gauguin’s The Yellow Christ and in Colossians 1, we are invited to breathe in the calm and peace of Christ. This time of prayer offers a retreat into His presence — where peace becomes a gift we can carry back into daily life.

Colossians 1:19-20

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Find a comfortable position. Let your shoulders soften. Let your jaw unclench.

Breathe in calm. Breathe in peace.

Listen.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

Many of us carry a longing for a simpler life—free from the stress of the daily grind, free from the constant noise. You may not be able to leave everything behind. Responsibilities may hold you where you are. Still, you can step away for a moment—from the cares and concerns of the world—and breathe the calm and peace of the soul found in God.

As you gaze at the artwork, imagine yourself drawn into its stillness. Let the image become a place of retreat—as though you are gathered around Christ, present with him now.

Scripture

Colossians 1:19–20 (The Inclusive Bible)

God wanted all perfection to be found in Christ and all things to be reconciled to God through Christ—everything in heaven
and everything on earth—when Christ made peace by dying on the cross.

Let these words sink in. Know that Christ is present.

Artwork for Prayerful Reflection

The Yellow Christ — Paul Gauguin

As you look, notice those gathered around the foot of the cross, kneeling in prayer.

Gauguin chose yellow—a harvest color, a color of life—to convey the quiet piety of a people longing for peace.

Let this scene become your prayer. Bring your worries, your anxieties, your stress, and place them near Christ.

Reflection Questions

As you gaze at the painting, what details draw your attention first?

Where in the image do you notice signs of a simpler life, and what longing does that stir in you?

What in this scene holds a sense of inner peace and calm for you today?

As you notice the color yellow—harvest, life—what kind of life do you feel invited to receive?

When you imagine yourself gathered near the cross, what does it feel like to be present with Christ right now?

In your own life, what worries or stresses are asking to be placed into Christ’s care today?

As you offer those burdens, what words or phrases rise in you—comfort, challenge, invitation?

What do you sense Christ saying to you as you give your worries to him?

What do you sense Christ saying to you as you receive his peace?

As you prepare to return to daily life, what practice of pausing and breathing might help you remember this peace?

Closing

Christ of peace, receive our worries, our anxieties, and our stress. Reconcile what is divided within us, and breathe your calm into our bodies and our days. Let your peace go with us as we return. Amen.
