Experience the sacred connection between heaven and earth in Garofalo’s Ascension of Christ. This episode invites reflection on Christ’s ongoing presence as he empowers believers through the Spirit. Discover how prayer bridges our earthly struggles with divine grace and promise.

Acts 1:7-11

Use this guide for prayer and contemplation. Read slowly, pausing as needed for silence and reflection.

Opening

Take a slow breath.

Let your shoulders soften.

Settle your body into the place where you are.

Christ is near.

Reflection on Contemplative Prayer

Today, let your prayer be held by an image made for worship: an altarpiece that lifts the eyes toward heaven, while keeping the heart rooted on earth.

As you gaze, notice the tension you carry—between what is ordinary and what is holy, between struggle and hope. Christ stands at the center of that connection—present with you, and yet drawing all things toward the heart of God. Focus on your connection to Christ.

Scripture

Acts 1:7–11 (The Inclusive Bible)

Jesus replied, “It’s not for you to know times or dates that Abba God has decided. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; then you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.”

Having said this, Jesus was lifted up in a cloud before their eyes and taken from their sight. They were still gazing up into the heavens when two messengers, dressed in white, stood beside them. “You Galileans, why are you standing here looking up at the skies?” they asked. “Jesus, who has been taken from you—this same Jesus will return in the same way you watched him go into heaven.”

Holy Spirit, come near.

As Jesus is lifted up, let him lift what is on your heart—your prayers, your praises, your longing—and carry it to God.

Artwork for Prayerful Reflection

The Ascension of Christ, Benvenuto Tisi de Garofalo

Let this painting be an altar in your imagination. Take it all in. Let your eyes wander slowly.

At the bottom, Jesus stands among the disciples—near, embodied, within reach.

Above, Christ rises toward the heavenly, surrounded by cloud and light, with the faithful of heaven gathered behind him.

Stay with the mystery: Christ moving between earth and heaven, a conduit flowing both ways—bringing your prayers to God and bringing God’s blessings to you.

Reflection Questions

As you gaze at the painting, what draws your attention first?

What emotions begin to rise in you as you take in the scene?

Imagine this image placed before you in worship—what part of your life comes with you into that sanctuary?

If you were standing among the disciples, where would you find yourself, and what would your body be saying without words?

As you notice faces that seem dismayed and others that seem awed, where do you recognize your own heart today?

The painting holds Christ both on earth and ascending—what does that doubleness awaken in your prayer?

With a church and a castle in the background—religion and government—what powers shape your days, and how do you want Christ to meet you there?

As you listen again to the Scripture, what words bring clarity, courage, or gentle correction for you?

What beginnings of a message are stirring within you, and how might God be expanding them in silence?

What does God want you to carry from this time of contemplation into the rest of your day?

Closing

Christ who ascends and yet remains with us, receive what we bring—our prayers, our praises, our weary places, and our hopes. Connect our earthly life with your heavenly life, and make us your witnesses by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
